BOOKS
EVERYBODY'S COMET: A LAYMAN'S GUIDE TO COMET HALE-BOPP

(High-Lonesome Books, 1996)

SPECIAL ANNIVERARY EDITION, WITH NEW CHAPTER, "THE VIEW TEN YEARS LATER" NOW AVAILABLE! (2005)

"In writing about the comet that he and Thomas Bopp found on the same night, Alan Hale has made this book much more than merely a guide to Comet Hale-Bopp. With a personal touch and a sense of humor, Dr. Hale recounts the fascinating story of discovery and confirmation, plus the continued study of the intriguing changes in Hale-Bopp, which may be one of the 'great comets' in history. He also explains the science and history of comets, and gives practical advice about seeing them when they show up. His argument for scientific literacy is terrific, and his final sentence utterly compelling."

-- From the preface by Janet Asimov

Personally autographed copies: $20

Alan Hale wrote a new chapter, "The View Ten Years Later" in 2005 to mark the ten-year anniversary of the comet's discovery. This new chapter discusses the comet's appearance (and includes numerous photographs), as well as much of the science we learned from Hale-Bopp. It also includes discussion of how cometary science as a whole has advanced during the past ten years -- including the various spacecraft missions -- as well as a narrative of how the author's personal life has been affected by the discovery and his activities since the comet's appearance.

Available as a CD insert for the "Special Anniversary Edition" of Everybody's Comet, or (for those who may already have a copy of the book) for $5 as a CD (.pdf files).
