COMMERCIAL SPACE
At the Southwest Institute we believe that space is a place, not a program. We are working with a number of organizations and corporations to create a future where the space frontier is available for everyone and where humanity is reaching for the stars.

One of the endeavors we are involved in is the effort to create a fully commercial spaceport in southern New Mexico adjacent to White Sands Missile Range, the birthplace of America's space effort. The New Mexico Office for Space Commercialization is our

point of contact for specific information about this spaceport. Alan Hale is a member of, and has served on the Executive Committee of, the New Mexico Space Alliance, a citizen's group formed to advocate the development of the spaceport and commercial space operations in general.
Through our relationship with the New Mexico Space Alliance we are pleased to have been part of the effort to bring the X-Prize Cup to southern New Mexico. The inaugural "Countdown to the X-Prize Cup" was held on October 9, 2005, and the X-Prize Cup will be an annual event thereafter.
